This coloured pencil sketch captures a curious otter resting in the gentle flow of the water, its bright eyes and delicate whiskers giving it an irresistibly cute and friendly expression. The otter appears playful and alert, as though it has just paused for a moment to look toward the viewer, full of quiet curiosity and spirit.
Soft hues of warm yellow, green, and grey flow throughout the piece, echoing the natural tones of river water and surrounding landscapes. The rippling water reflects these colours back into the otter’s coat, creating a beautiful harmony between the animal and its environment. The reflections and gentle movement of the water add a sense of life and calm to the composition.
This piece is filled with warmth, fun, and a friendly energy. It was inspired by the many peaceful moments I have spent beside rivers while my partner fly fishes. As he casts his line, I often sit quietly watching the soft ripples move across the water, always hoping that this might be the moment an otter appears in its natural habitat.
Otters have such wonderful personalities — playful, curious, and undeniably charming. Yet like many wild creatures, beneath that sweet and innocent appearance lies a strong and capable nature. They carry both gentleness and a hint of wild spirit within them, and it is this fascinating balance that I wanted to capture in this drawing. It is a celebration of those peaceful riverside moments and the quiet excitement of observing nature’s beautiful and sometimes mysterious creatures.
